There are obvious differences between machining and die-casting of battery shells, which are mainly reflected in production methods, applicable materials, costs, precision and other aspects.
Machining is the cutting of raw materials by various mechanical equipment (such as CNC machine tools, milling machines, lathes, etc.) to achieve the required shape and size. Machining can achieve very high dimensional accuracy and surface finish, and is particularly suitable for complex structures that require fine processing. Machining can be flexible for small quantities, customized or complex structures of shells. A variety of metal materials (such as stainless steel, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, etc.) can be used for processing, and the range of material selection is wide. Compared with die-casting, machining does not require mold design and manufacturing, and is suitable for small batches and customized production, especially for battery shells that require precision processing.
Die-casting is a process that injects molten metal (usually aluminum, zinc, magnesium alloy) into a steel mold under high pressure and cools it into shape, which is often used in mass production. It is suitable for mass production, fast production speed, especially when the production quantity is large, and the unit cost is relatively low. In mass production, the production cost of die casting is relatively low, especially for aluminum alloy housings, the cost advantage of die casting process is obvious. The surface of die-casting products is relatively smooth, and complex shapes can be directly obtained, reducing the subsequent processing steps. The mold can be designed into very complex shapes, making the die-cast housing lighter and thinner, saving materials.
In general, different processes are often selected according to needs during the production of battery housings. If it is a common small battery such as mobile phone battery, laptop battery, etc., die casting or aluminum alloy housing may be used more; while for high-end or special requirements of battery housing, machining process may be used.
